Proposed NJ Law Would Require Social Nets To Police Sites

Tuesday, March 31st, 2009

New Jersey lawmakers are considering new legislation that would require Facebook, MySpace and others to police social networking sites for offensive posts or else face potential consumer fraud lawsuits.

But some lawyers say that even if the measure is enacted, it’s not likely to have much impact on social networking sites because the federal Communications Decency Act immunizes such sites from lawsuits based on material posted by users.

The bill is part of state Attorney General Anne Milgram’s Internet safety initiative. “The social networking site safety act is intended to deter cyber-bullying and the misuse of social networking Web sites,” the Office of Attorney General said in a statement about the measure. “The bill empowers users of social networking sites to take steps to stop harassment or exploitation.”

Leon County Commissioners Vote Tonight On Outdoor Media Ordinance

Thursday, March 19th, 2009

Tonight the Leon County Commission will host the first of two public hearings on proposed changes to the Leon County Sign Ordinance.

It is my understanding that local billboard companies and the Outdoor Association have helped to draft ordinance language that will be fair to the local neighborhoods, respectful of Tallahassee’s growth model but still supports the Outdoor Advertising industry.

As President of the local chapter of the American Advertising Federation, I’ve had the opportunity to personally work with all the outdoor media companies locally.  All are gracious in their support of the community, and donate space to numerous nonprofit organizations and civic organizations.

Senate committee eyes sales tax exemptions

Thursday, March 5th, 2009

by Jack Hebert, Fourth District AAF Lobbyist

Tallahassee, Fla. - Facing an ever-deepening budget hole, a Senate committee today unleashed what appears will be a systematic effort during Florida’s upcoming regular legislative session to review the current exemptions and exclusions from Florida’s state sales tax, perhaps later morphing into a scavenger hunt to find new revenue sources for the state.

“We have a mammoth undertaking,” remarked Senate Finance and Tax Committee Chairman Thad Altman (R-Rockledge) during a staff presentation designed as a primer on sales tax preferences and exemptions for the committee members. Altman went on to say that the committee would want to hear from both committee members and stakeholders in taking a “value-based” approach to the review process.  (more…)
